What is a pooled sample?

A pooled sample is simple: collect a small amount of faeces once daily for three consecutive days and place each day’s sample into the same sample pot.

Between collections, store the pot refrigerated at 4 °C, as advised above in line with ESCCAP guidelines. Refrigeration helps limit further development or hatching of parasite stages and preserves overall sample integrity. Ensure the container is tightly sealed and contains as little air as possible.

Only a small amount of faeces is required for testing. A single sample can also be tested if preferred or if pooled sampling is not possible. We do understand that for some species a pooled sample may not be possible, for example in reptiles or more urgent cases.

Pooled sampling increases the likelihood of detecting parasites that may be intermittently shed, helping to reduce the risk of false-negative results.
